This post collects Alan's grammar notes for the JLPT N4. It opens with tables for forming the potential form (可能形) and the volitional form (意向形) for group I, II and III verbs, noting that the object particle を changes to が with the potential form. Most patterns are written as KaTeX formulas showing which forms each one connects to, including ~んです, ~ていただけませんか, 疑問詞+~たらいいですか, ~ながら, ~ています, ~し、~し, ~てしまいます, ~てあります, ~ておきます, ~つもりです, ~予定です, まだ~ていません, ~たほうがいいです, ~でしょう, ~かもしれません and ~ましょう. Short English explanations cover the nuances of みえます and 聞こえます, ができます, しか with a negative, contrastive は, それで, ありました and とか, and the three uses of ~ています: an ongoing action, a habit, and a resulting state.
